Edinburgh Chinese Community School
Liberton High School, 328 Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh EH17 7PT
The Edinburgh Chinese Community School (ECCS) was founded in Summer 2000.
The mission of ECCS is to promote the Chinese language, culture and the advancement of community education.
For 2009/2010 we had a total of 130 students in 11 Cantonese Language Classes (80 students) and 8 Mandarin Language Classes (50 students).
We are hoping to start 2 new classes, Conversational Mandarin for Beginners for children ages 10 to 16 and one for adults ages 17+, so those interested please indicate on registration forms which class you would like to attend... We will continue with our long running Adult Conversational Mandarin Class which is mainly for those with intermediate to advanced level of Mandarin.
Cultural classes:
We ran Chinese Knotting, Chinese Calligraphy & Painting, Hip Hop Dance classes and a badminton club. Arranged for Ping Pong tables to be available during school hours for parents to use as well as students during break time. We have a possibility to offer Taekwando and Taiji for 2010/2011. Those interested, please contact us by email and we will get in touch.
Our Academic Achievements:
To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of ECCS, I asked the teachers to encourage their students to take ownership of their school by designing a cover for their note books. I have chosen 4 designs from the entries to win a prize each and we will use their designs for future note book covers.
Also, to encourage our students to write in Chinese, I asked for their written works over the last 2 terms and have chosen a few to receive recognition awards. Some of the written works are on display and I would like to say, Thank you, to all the teachers for their encouragement and the students for submitting their works.
We celebrated the Moon Festival on 3rd October, 2009 with a concert with singing and music provided by our students and members of our community led by Fong Kwok Mun. We had our annual fund-raising Spring Festival Fair and Concert on 20th Feb organised by myself with the help of all teachers, parents and volunteers. Also a fund-raising Tiger Ceilidh organised by Queenie. Last Saturday, we had a Sports Day organised by some of the parents led by Chris Chan and Charlotte Tang.
Thank you to all the volunteers like Lydia Ma, Keng Goh, Whui Cheng, Chris Chan, Marie Chan, Joyce Wong and many more whose names I may not have mentioned. Without your support and help throughout the year, we would not be able to offer this level of activities for everyone. Also we would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation for our teachers who have all given lots of their time to the school and students. Special mention must be made of Ms Daisy Chan, who has been with us since the very beginning and Ms Jenny Zhang, Ms Rebecca Chan, Ms Ng Wai Ping, Mr Phlip Chan and Mr Vinton Poon, all of whom have given dedicated teaching service for over 5 years each.
Today, for our 10th anniversary PGD we have an exhibition of some of our students' written works and some photos from the past and present on display in the reception and Assembly hall areas, so please take some time to have a look at all the exhibits. If you have more to contribute please feel free to do so and we will add to our collection.
Thank you, have a Happy Summer and see you when school re-opens on 11th Sept 2010.
